Martin’s Story: Rediscovering Independence at Manor Grange
Before moving into Manor Grange Care Home, Martin worked as a painter and decorator and enjoyed a busy, sociable life.
After being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, Martin's balance and mobility became increasingly affected. As a result, he found himself spending more time at home, leading to increasing social isolation and loneliness. The progression of the condition also impacted his confidence, particularly following a fall that resulted in a hospital stay during the COVID-19 pandemic. To make matters worse, his care package was reduced due to staff shortages and he was unable to safely return home.
Moving to Manor Grange Care Home provided the support he needed while allowing him to continue living as independently as possible. Today, Martin has lived at Manor Grange for five happy years and is a much-loved member of our community.
Keeping Moving Forward
As a relatively young resident at 69 years old, it has sometimes been difficult for Martin to see his friends of a similar age not requiring the same level of support. However, his care is designed specifically around him, allowing him to maintain his autonomy in every way possible while receiving discreet assistance whenever needed.
One of Martin's greatest strengths is his determination, especially when it comes to his mobility. He prefers not to stay seated for long and is always keen to keep moving around the home. He also completes multiple laps of the enclosed garden every day, often regardless of the weather.
This dedication culminated in an incredible fundraising challenge, during which he completed 48 laps of the garden, equivalent to five kilometres, to raise money for charity. Martin undertook the challenge with confidence, reassured by the safety of the environment and the availability of staff support if required. Completing this challenge brought Martin a tremendous sense of achievement and pride.
We are always looking for ways to support residents like Martin’s independence. Recently, new doors have been installed throughout the home which can be kept open wherever possible. This enables Martin to move around freely and confidently without unnecessary obstacles. These small adjustments make a valuable difference to his daily life and help him maintain a sense of freedom and control.
The Importance of Community
Martin has always been sociable and continues to enjoy strong friendships. Many of his friends regularly visit him at Manor Grange or take him out for days out, often commenting on his positivity and welfare despite the challenges he has faced.
The confidence Martin has gained during his time at Manor Grange has reignited his distinctive sense of humour which brings warmth and laughter wherever he goes. His positive outlook and light-hearted banter has made him popular with residents, staff, visitors and friends alike.
Lead Activity Coordinator Maureen Cameron says: "Martin embraces new challenges and brings warmth and humour to those around him, having previously contributed a regular joke feature to the Manor Grange Newsletter. His time at Manor Grange has greatly enhanced his quality of life, offering the balance of social engagement and independent time that suits him. Well regarded by staff, residents and visitors, Martin brings positivity to the community. He no longer experiences loneliness and makes full use of the facilities."
Maintaining Identity in a Care Home
Martin has always been a passionate football supporter and remains a devoted Celtic fan. Sharing the same full name as the former Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has become a source of amusement among staff and residents. To celebrate this connection, staff placed a photo of the famous manager on Martin's bedroom door, something he absolutely loves. The team are currently hoping to make another dream a reality by arranging a trip for Martin to attend a Celtic match in person.
Martin is also an avid film enthusiast and regularly makes his way to our home's cinema room to enjoy whatever is showing.
Martin's background as a painter and decorator remains an important part of his identity. Recently, he was able to put those skills to good use by helping prepare the garden benches for painting, sanding them ready for the next stage of refurbishment. It was a wonderful opportunity for him to contribute to the home environment and provide a sense of purpose and belonging.
